Zephyrus

Starting at the top, the I-35W bridge article by Ben Perszyk in my opinion is missing the key element of "who cares?" While the bridge situation is interesting, it doesn't affect teh majority of the students at EHS. Personally, I used that bridge at least a dozen times a day for my job this summer, so it hits home for me, but I doubt there are that many students at EHS that worked full time as a driver downtown. The solution to this problem would be to get some interviews with some students or adults at teh school that use the bridge frequently as use that as teh spin on the story. While professional quotes are great, you need to relate it to the high school or it shouldn't belong in the paper.
I think the article by D.J Adams entitled "Safety First" about the lockdown drills was a solid article and very good as far as relating the topic to the high school is concerned. In fact, I just had a similar occurence where my teacher just kept on teaching during the most recent drill, so at least for me I am able to relate to the topic. Overall the article is solid, combining timeliness, proximity, and conflict. The conflict piece is the part about some teachers following the rules and taking the drill seriously, which other teachers ignore it and view the drills as an unnecessary annoyance.
One aspect that I do not approve of is the manner in which the paper handled the letter to the editor. First of all, you never publish a letter to the editor unless you have the name, if someone is going to complain than they should be willing to reveal themselves and own up to what they are saying. So in that respect, I would have never published that letter to the editor. Secondly, I would not have published a response. Letters to the editor are so people can express their opinion about a topic or article, they aren't supposed to be ongoing battles of words between the writers and the readers. It's fine to publish letters to the editor in your newspaper, but leave them as letters to the editor, don't turn them into a battle royale between the journalists and a hostile group of angry readers.
For the article on the hopkins theater, I think that this was a good topic to write about because it relates to area. The story however, does nto have many key elements that should be present, it doesn't have timeliness but makes up for it with the relavence that the topic has for teenagers in teh high school on a tight budget.

By Ryan Morris

For Edina High School Thespians, the 2006-2007 school year was a year filled with sold out shows and awe-inspiring performances. An imperative asset to last year’s productions was the host of senior actors that were on their way out the door to college.

Now, in the 2007-2008 school year, the much anticipated fall production is drawing near and the anxiety is rising to see if this year’s set of actors will be able to meet the expectations set by the community.

“We get teary eyed just thinking of them.” Said set coordinator and engineer Mr. Bob Sedof, recalling the graduates.

With the departure of the 2007 graduates however, their absence has been bitter sweet.

"The departed senior class had a lot of experienced actors that were leaders for everybody.” Said Michael Curran-Dorsano, a seasoned senior Edina actor.

The departed actors will be missed, but at the same time, new doors have been opened for up and coming lower classmen actors.

“The gap left by the seniors that left this year has forced kids to take an active role in the department,” said Dorsano. “Many have stepped up and led by example.”

The production season is still just getting underway, “It’s going to be an interesting year,” said Cole Peterson, a senior actor who is in the upcoming show West Side Story.

However, high hopes and positive attitudes are helping the year get off on what looks to be a great start. West Side Story, which will run in mid october, will be a first glimpse of the whats in store for this upcoming season.

With the conclusion of West Side Story, the thespian's focus will shift from musicals to a drama for the upcoming one act play competition. The competition travels from high school to high school every year, this year happens to be the year for Edina to host the competition.

Near the end of January, high schools from across the twin cities area will send their productions and actors to compete here at EHS for the oppertunity to take their show to state.

A seperated but connected community

1) CYG10-21-07
2) Culture
3) -Proximity: youth groups in the surrounding area
-Prominence: youth leaders are well known in their respective groups and communities, which would give the readers a very good chance of being able to relate
-Other(emotional): many of the communities in these churches are very emotionally and spiritually involved with their groups
4) The story will be about the differences in environment and angles as far as the teaching is concerned. Many misconceptions surround certain youth groups thoughts and attitudes toward other groups.
5) I will contact the youth leaders of some of the surround youth groups in churches in the area. I will also interview many of the participants in these youth groups.
6) The kind of church, and the general angle of how things are run in the different groups
7) How teaching methods and environments differ between different churchs. Why some of the misconceptions come about. When different groups meet.
8) Pictures of the services, the kids who are participating in the group
9) The individual churchs and leaders
10) Most youth services happen on wednesday nights, so it will take a few weeks to complete the observations and story

New senior lunch priviledges; stricter and enforced

1) SLP10-21-07
2) Features
3) -proximity: involved with the high school, seniors in particular
-conflict: if juniors feel that since they have drivers licenses too, that they should have the same priviledges
- other(progress): this is a change from the existant, but not enforced rules of previous years
4) The story will be about the new regulations and priviledges laid out for the senior class of 2008 at the highschool. Previously open lunch has technically been for seniors only but this rule was disregarded and underclassmen were leaving at their leisure. Now this new rule has cracked down on the open lunch policy and has stirred up some disgruntled emotions from juniors who also have drivers licenses
5) I would contact the principal in order to ask a few questions about the policy and to request the name of the security personnel who are posted at the school entrance from time to time. I would also ask a few juniors and seniors what their opinions are on the policy.
6) The exact rule from the policy book of the school
7) Why they put this policy in place, when it was decided upon, how long it is intended to be in effect, who will be enforcing it full time? The standard who, what, where, when, why
8) The security personnel posted at the entrance, pictures of seniors displaying the passes to leave
9) Security personnel and students
10) Getting a meeting scheduled with the security personnel

Curiosity Is A Necessity

Of the six aspects of being a good reporter that the article "To Be A Successful Reporter", I believe that curiosity is one of the most important. Curiosity is what a reporter runs off of and what drives him (apart from paying the bills and a love of journalism of course). Curiosity leads a reporter to investigate and dig up information that isn't on the surface and that the other newspapers and reporters don't have. A good reporter investigates the past and present of his subject, thoroughly digging into the meat of the story. A good reporter needs the information and details that the other reporters don't have, that's what makes him a good reporter. So in all, curiosity is a definite must when it comes to being a successful reporter.

A little somethin about edina

One of the things that goes unnoticed in a town like edina is the performing music aspect. A huge part of some of the churchs, community centers and theaters in edina is the live music performances and shows that go on all the time. Unfortunately these venues, shows, and musicians are not well known and very often to the common citizen's knowledge, don't even exist. Many of these performances are based in churchs and public sites around the area. I play in the band at Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, we perform sunday mornings and wednesday evenings. I also know of church music groups in churchs around the area like St. Patricks Catholic Church on Valley View Rd. and Christ Presbeterian Church by highway 100. A more low key and relaxed environment can be found at The Depot coffee show on Excelsion Blvd. in Hopkins by highway 169. As far as types and genres of music, they are as varied and diverse as someone could imagine. You coudl be at a show listening to anything from jazz, to punk, to hardcore and screamo. All the same, music and musical performances are a large part of the lives of many students and youth in the area who have deep roots in the area's music scene.
